Sweet Vintage Italian Millefiori Micromosaic Heart Link Bracelet

MICROMOSAICS: Micromosaics are a special form of mosaic that uses unusually small mosaic pieces (tesserae) of glass to make small figurative images. Wearing micromosaic jewelry became popular during the Grand Tour period (17Th – 19th century). Members of rich European families would travel around Europe taking in the sights and cultures of different countries. Italy was a very popular tourist spot as it had a long and prestigious history in arts and culture – a favorite subject in aristocratic circles. It was also a famous glass producer and canny Italian craftsmen quickly turned their glass-making skills to making stunning miniature micromosaic pictures for their rich visitors. The small size of micromosaics was appealing. Such pieces could be worn on the Grand Tourist’s continuing journey or sent back home to loved ones as a kind of fore-runner to modern postcards.

MILLIEFIORI: Millefiori, which translates to “thousand flowers,” is a special glass tessarae(small mosaic piece) imported from Murano, Italy. It is cut from layered glass rods or canes known as murrine, which have different colors of glass within them that resemble mini flower, bullseyes and stars when viewed from the ends. A murrine rod is heated in a furnace and pulled until thin while still maintaining the cross-sections’s design. It is then cut into beads or discs when cooled.

THIS MILLEFIORI MICROMOSAIC BRACELET: My father brought this sweet little bracelet back from Italy for me when I was a young girl. It features six heart-shaped and six round-shaped millefiori micromosaic links, encased in and connected by brass. The fastening is a brass hook and eye. The tesserae colors include red, blue, green, white, black and yellow. The white flowers with red centers and the red flowers with yellow centers and the green/black/white/red variegated oblong pieces are millefiori micromosaic pieces. The blue oblong pieces are simple micromosaic pieces. It measures 7 3/8” long x ½” wide. The weight is .41 oz.

CONDITION: Excellent condition.
