Glamorous 1980s Napier Gold Tone Link Choker Necklace and Earrings Set

CHOKER NECKLACES: A choker is a close-fitting necklace that is worn around the neck, mostly just a little above the bottom of the neck. Although chokers have made their big way into the contemporary fashion book, their long and brilliant history can be traced back to ancient times. Around 2500 BC, the Sumerians were the first to wear golden choker necklaces. The ruling Pharaohs also wore these necklaces and prized them in the Egyptian culture. What has remained intact over the centuries is the choker’s snug fit against the wearer’s neck and its unfailing glamourous appeal.

NAPIER COMPANY: The Napier Company is an American jewelry manufacturing company, and was one of the first modern corporations in the United States. The company got its start in North Attleboro, MA in 1878 under the name of The E. A. Bliss Co., manufacturing gilt men’s watch chains. During WWI and again in WWII the company ceased production of jewelry and instead focused on producing war-related items such a medallions and medals. The company was known for its ability to be on the forefront of fashion and design and had a history of sending its designers to Europe. In the 1950s the Napier Company presented First Lady Mamie Eisenhower with a bracelet bearing an elephant design and gifted contestants of the 1955 Miss America Pageant with fashion jewelry.

THIS CHOKER NECKLACE: This is a striking gold tone graduated oval link choker necklace signed Napier on the fold-over locking clasp. It features a heavy gold plate characteristic of vintage Napier necklaces. The lovely curved links with a slight twist have nice movement and drape. The necklace length measures 16 ¾” and the link widths graduate from 15/16” to 1 5/16”. The weight is 4.9 oz.

THESE EARRINGS: This is a pair of gold tone screw-hinge clip-on hoop earrings that have a nice and simple yet elevated look. They are both marked Napier on their hinges and feature the same heavy gold plate characteristic of vintage Napier jewelry. The diameter of the hoops measures ¾” while the width of the hoops measures 5/16” and the weight of the pair is .32 oz.

CONDITION: This jewelry set (bought by my mother) has never been worn and comes with the original receipt from Lazarus Kettering Store (Dayton, OH) dated 11/22/1989 and the original Napier tag. The price listed on the receipt is $70 less a holiday discount.
