As purchased from Old Modern Handicrafts, this HMS Surprise model and display case are in immaculate, undamaged condition. It is an accurate model of a ship originally built in 1970 as HMS Rose. This tall ship, based on original British Admiralty plans, was designed as a highly authentic replica of an 18th-century 24-gun frigate from England’s Nelson-era Royal Navy. She spent decades as a sail training vessel and attraction before being used as HMS Surprise in the Academy Award-winning film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (based on the novels by Patrick O’Brian). She was then retired to the San Diego Maritime Museum, who petitioned the Admiralty to change her name from Rose to HMS Surprise.
