The Legend of the Lavender Seats
The wood was harvested in the late autumn of 1968, destined for a traditionalist workshop that specialized in the strict, stately lines of Queen Anne revival furniture. For years, the eight chairs stood in dark, somber mahogany, hosting quiet, proper dinners in a New England estate where the soup was served cold and the conversation was even colder.
But change arrived in the flamboyant spring of 1984. The estate was bought by Penelope, an avant-garde interior decorator who specialized in what she called "high-drama domesticity." Stripping away the heavy varnish, she ordered the wood to be coated in a high-gloss, liquid lilac lacquer—a shade she claimed she saw in a dream about a Parisian twilight.
To ground the radical purple, she bypassed traditional silks and chose a sharp, tailored plaid for the seats, sourced from a small textile mill in Scotland. It was a defiant marriage of British haberdashery and Hollywood Regency rebellion. For decades, these eight seats hosted midnight cocktail parties, survived spilled gin fizzes, and listened to the gossip of artists, rebels, and film stars, waiting for the day they would find their next bold home.
